Pot Hole Hound — Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 5, 2026
Effective date: May 5, 2026
Pot Hole Hound is built privacy-first. We map potholes passively while you drive. We do not require an account, email, or any personal information.
What we collect
- GPS location of detected potholes and how far you’ve driven while monitoring
- Sensor readings (accelerometer) at the moment of each detection
- An anonymous device ID — a random string generated on your phone, not tied to you, your Apple ID, your Google account, or any other identifier
- A randomly assigned Hound name (e.g., “Drifting-Rose-Panda-23”) used solely for the community leaderboard. You can reroll this anytime in Settings.
What we don’t collect
- Your name, email address, phone number, or any contact information
- Continuous location or driving routes — we only record the moments and places where road impacts are detected
- Camera, photos, microphone, contacts, health data, or any other data on your phone
- Advertising IDs, IDFA, or third-party trackers
- Browsing history, search history, or in-app behavior beyond what’s required for the app to function
There are no advertisements in this app and no third-party trackers.
How your data is used
Data is used only to:
- Display detected potholes to you on your local map (Mine tab)
- Aggregate detections from all users into an anonymous community map and leaderboard (Hot Hounds tab)
- Help cities and road authorities identify priority repairs based on impact density and severity
Data is never sold, rented, shared with advertisers, or used to identify or track individual users.
Where data is stored
- On your device: A local SQLite database (in the app’s private storage sandbox) stores your detections for offline access.
- In the cloud: Anonymous detections are sent to our backend (hosted by Supabase, Inc., a managed Postgres provider) for the community leaderboard and map. Only the data described above is transmitted — never your name, account credentials, or full driving path.
We use HTTPS to encrypt all data in transit between your phone and our backend.
How long we retain data
- Local data: Persists on your device until you uninstall the app or clear app data manually.
- Community data: Pothole detection records are retained indefinitely so the community map remains useful over time. Records are anonymous and cannot be traced back to individual users.
Your rights
Because we don’t collect personal information, there is no individual account or profile to delete. The anonymous device ID and Hound name in our database are not linked to your identity.
If you’d like to:
- Stop contributing to the community map: Toggle off “Cloud Sync” in Settings (visible to advanced users; otherwise the app contributes by default).
- Stop using the app entirely: Uninstall it. Local data is removed automatically.
- Reroll your Hound name: Use the Reroll button in Settings.
If you have a specific concern about data appearing on the community map (for example, a pothole detected too close to your home address), contact us at the address below — we can remove or anonymize specific records.
Children’s privacy
Pot Hole Hound is intended for users 13 years of age or older (as the app’s primary use case is driving). We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If we discover that we’ve inadvertently received data from a child under 13, we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Significant changes will be highlighted on this page; minor wording revisions may be made without notice.
